About the Investec Derby
Also known as the Earls of Derby, the Stanley family had a rich history of horse-racing. James Stanley officialized horse-racing on the Langness Peninsula after gaining the Lordship of Mann in 1627. The event was born at a celebration that happened after the initial run of 1779’s Oaks Stakes. It was also named after one of the hosts of the party – the 12th Earl of Derby. The Derby’s inaugural running was held on 1780 and was won by Diomed. The collected prize money at that time was £1,065 15s. Next, the four following runnings were contested over a mile. In 1784, it was amended to the current distance of 1.5 miles. Three years later, Lord Derby achieved his first success with a horse named Sir Peter Teazle.
During the 19th century, the starting point of the race was moved more than once. The first time was in 1848 and the other in 1872. The Derby was initially set to run on a Thursday in the later part of May or early June. It mostly depended on when Easter occurred. In 1995, the event’s date was changed to the first Saturday of every June. Since that change, all the races have taken place on that day. Races that took place at Newmarket from the periods of 1915-1918 and 1940-1945 were called New Derby.
Since its inception, the Investec Derby Festival led to the actualization of similar events in other parts of the world. European variations include the Prix du Jockey Club, the Deutsches Derby, the Derby Italiano, and more. Tokyo Yūshun, New Zealand Derby, and the Australian Derby are other national equivalents. From the 20th to the 21st century, the Epsom racecourse has gone through a succession of notable improvements. For instance, the Queen’s Stand was opened in 1992 by Her Majesty. Other significant enhancements included a paddock behind the stands, the erection of a large screen, full color race cards, and the Duchess’s Stand. In 2010, Holiday Inn Express was opened on the site of the old paddock. It is a 120-bedroom hotel that offered the convenience of an overnight stay for guests.
